Helmholtz Association joins SpringerOpen's membership programme

Following the launch of the series of Open Access journals SpringerOpen, the Helmholtz Association has signed an agreement for Open Access membership with Springer Science+Business Media. Under the agreement, the individual Helmholtz research centres will pay the article processing charges for papers published by their authors in SpringerOpen and BioMed Central journals.

A press release issued by the publishers quotes Dr Bernhard Mittermaier, head of the Central Library at Forschungszentrum J�lich, as saying: "The agreement is part of our mission to establish long-lasting mechanisms securing reasonable publication charges for open access journals."

Registration for OA Week 2010 on open-access.net

Once again, the information platform open-access.net is supporting Open Access Week, which takes place from 18 to 24 October 2010. On our Open Access Week web pages you will find a collection of ideas for activities as well as materials and templates. In addition, we have compiled a documentation of the activities that took place in Germany within the framework of Open Access Week 2009. We hope it will be a source of inspiration for you.

As was the case last year, all participating institutions and individuals have the opportunity to register for Open Access Week and to present on the information platform the activities they are planning.
We are hoping that this year also there will be a very high level of participation in Open Access Week!

Expert Conference on Open Access and Open Data in Cologne

Six years after the first Cologne conference on Open Access, the second event of this kind, the Open Access - Open Data conference will take place on 13 and 14 December 2010. The conference will review the current status of development of the Open Access movement and discuss the challenges that the next ten years will bring. In addition, new strategies for the increasingly important Open Data movement will be discussed.

OA community called upon to lobby for a Google Doodle for OA Week 2010

To draw world-wide attention to this year's Open Access Week (18 - 24 October 2010), the OA community is being called upon to lobby Google to dedicate a Google Doodle to Open Access that week. As Google gets lots of requests of this kind, it would be great if as many people as possible could send an e-mail with the following text to proposals(at)google.com:

The week of October 18th 2010 is international Open Access Week, with events and activities taking place world-wide on university and research campuses. We believe that Open Access - researchers making their research articles available for free to all - is an exciting and important shift in the availability of research for scholars and the public. We would like to support the idea of a Google Doodle on Open Access for this week.

German Copyright Coalition proposes general exception to copyright for scientific and education purposes

The Coalition for Action "Copyright for Education and Research" has proposed that German copyright law be amended to allow a general exception to copyright for scientific and education purposes. The proposed amendment to Section 45 of the German Copyright Act ( � 45 UrhG) could replace the exceptions to copyright for scientific and education purposes already laid down in the act. The Coalition plans to take the proposal to the other European states via the European Network for Copyright in Support of Education and Science (ENCES).

CERN is awarded the SPARC Europe Award

The 2010 SPARC-Europe Award for Outstanding Achievements in Scholarly Communications goes to CERN for its comprehensive approach to Open Access, especially in respect of the SCOAP³ project.

SCOAP³ (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing) is an innovative Open Access initiative for publishing in high-energy physics.
