Pilot project OPEN Library Political Science launched

12.06.2018

The aim of the pilot project OPEN Library Political Science is to develop a new open access business model for e-books: Instead of purchasing e-book licences in the usual way, the participating libraries will enable the open access publication of the entire frontlist "Political Science at transcript 2019" (20 titles) by paying a fee within the framework of a crowdfunding model.

OPEN Library Political Science is a collaborative project of the National Contact Point Open  Access OA2020-DE, the academic publisher transcript, the Political Science Information Service (FID Political Science) at the State and University Library Bremen, and Knowledge Unlatched.

Via consortial solutions such as this, open access can become financially viable for entire subject collections. Based on the well-known acquisition model "e-book package," transcript will bundle into a package its 2019 frontlist  – that it, all its forthcoming titles – in the area of political science. The financial resources of the participating libraries will thus be used to fund the free availability of the works for all, rather than to acquire fee-based e-books for a single library.

Advantages of the model compared to the current standard practice of licensing e-books
•    Elimination of licence fees for e-books; financing enabled by budgetary restructuring
•    No restrictions on the use of the content
•    Visibility of the co-financing institutions through sponsoring
•    Anchoring of the FID and the libraries in the subject-specific open access publishing process

Further information and details of participation possibilities for libraries can be found on the websites of
