Fair Open Access Alliance and the Technische Informationsbibliothek sign cooperation agreement

17.11.2017

On 9 November 2017, the Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB), the German National Library of Science and Technology, signed a cooperation agreement with the Fair Open Access Alliance (FOAA). Aimed at converting journals to open access (so-called "journal flipping"), the initial focus of the cooperation will be on supporting mathematical journals that have undergone conversion.
When converting to open access, these journals will adhere to the Fair Open Access Principles: they will have a transparent ownership structure; any fees paid on behalf of the journal to publishers will be low and transparent; no fees will be payable by the authors or their institutions; all articles will be published open access and an open access licence will be used.
For TIB, the conversion of established journals to open access is an important element of open access transformation. TIB Director, Professor Dr Auer, explained that the aim of the cooperation was to achieve optimal accessibility of established journals that are well-known in their respective communities. With the support of the FOAA, TIB wanted to contribute to giving more weight to sustainable OA models that do not involve any additional costs for authors.
FOAA President, Prof. Johan Rooryck, said how pleased he was to welcome the German National Library of Science and Technology, aboard: "TIB has agreed to support one of the journals of Mathematics in Open Access (MathOA) that are flipping to Fair Open Access. TIB is the first Supporting Participant to join us since we started FOAA in the summer of 2017, and we hope to welcome many more libraries and organisations in the future. We have set up a participant programme for this purpose.
TIB seeks to cooperate with the FOAA on a continuous basis. When doing so, it will cooperate actively with the communities in the field of mathematics and other disciplines.
