New DFG funding programme "Open-Access-Publikationskosten"

The DFG supports the Open Access transformation by restructuring financial flows with a new programme

Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG - German Research Foundation) has published the programme documents for its new funding programme "Open-Access-Publikationskosten" (Open Access Publication costs). It is aimed at scientific institutions that can apply for grants to cover the costs of Open Access publications by members of the institutions' staff. The programme runs from 2021 to 2027 and applications for funding can be submitted by 4 May each year.

"The funding underlines that Open Access has a functional role to play in improving scientific communication and that pricing should be based on this function," writes the DFG on its website. With this programme, the DFG aims to support the transformation of Open Access by restructuring financial flows. "It also serves to work towards greater transparency in the number and cost of publications that appear in Open Access", as Dr. Angela Holzer, a member of the DFG's Literature Supply and Information Systems Group, explains: "Within the framework of the funding, institutions can apply for funds to centrally finance the Open Access provision of scientific articles and books".
